GRAPHIC TRIAL
This is the poster for the exhibition "GRAPHIC TRIAL" organized by the Japanese printing company Toppan. In 2023, the exhibition, which seeks to experiment with and explore new printing expressions, was
held under the theme of "FEEL" by four selected designers. Selected designers and Toppan Printing's Printing Director teamed up to pursue new printing expressions never seen before.
The concept revolves around the juxtaposition of society on one side and the viewer on the other. Transparent posters with a mirror finish occupy the space in between. Mainly featuring objects that catch and reflect light, they intersect, invert, and merge. The varied reflections created by ink and varnish form a layered world within a single graphic.
The work is themed "Beyond the Poster and Us," and they are incomplete without the viewer, who is urged to view themselves through the posters. We used special ink on transparent posters to create artworks with a mirror finish that blend the viewer and his/her surroundings with the artwork.
This artwork changes based on the viewer. If the viewer is wearing black clothing, the mirrored surface turns black; if wearing white, it turns white. The background and reflections also change with the viewer’s height and viewing angles, altering how the artwork appears to each viewer. The work is only complete when these three different elements come together: The viewer’s reflection in the mirror, the background behind the transparent poster, and the graphics printed on the poster.
The five posters illustrate how we "Feel," each representing one of the five senses. The background graphics are inspired by Japanese kanji characters for "sight, hearing, taste, smell, and touch." These senses are depicted as shapes visualized from the kanji characters. Photos attributed to the five senses were also picked and printed onto the posters. For example, familiar items like plastic bags and empty cans were chosen to prompt viewers to ponder the significance of the artwork.
