竹尾 青山見本帖のデザイナーによる展覧会 “AOYAMA CREATORS STOCK” 15回目となる村上雅士の個展「affects」。
形そのものを言語の代わりとして国境、言語を超え、グラフィックデザインを作品として文字自体の意味性から解放し、ひとつの造形物として再解釈することで言語を超えられるのではないかという仮説のもと、それを体現した作品を制作し展示を行った。ギャラリー内のいくつかの異なる展示ブースに対して、それぞれの環境に合わせ外から影響を受け変容するポスターシリーズを制作、インスタレーションとして展開した。
物質性そのものを持たない映像や体験型の作品が多数を占める現代アートに対してテクノロジーとは逆にアナログな手法をとりデジタルをモチーフとしながら物質性を持たせ逆方向からアプローチすることで、見慣れたデジタル表現に新しい表情を持たせるというトライアル作品。
The “affects” project is a private exhibition by Masashi Murakami that was held at the gallery of Takeo Co., Ltd., which is a paper distributor in Japan. I created this series for this exhibition.
In architecture, crafts, and product design, shapes themselves serve the purpose of languages, making it possible to achieve a common understanding that goes beyond borders and language barriers. However, language and characters serve an important role in graphic design due to its nature, and I have constantly felt the inclination to be constrained by the boundaries of language. This inclination is especially prominent in Japan, and although there is a slight amount of interaction within the Eastern Asian sphere, I believe that there is a significant wall between Europe and the Americas and Asia in the field of graphic design.
I wanted to create pieces that can go beyond the walls of graphic design under the hypothesis that it would be possible to transcend language by freeing characters from their meaning and reinterpreting them as shapes.
Because this gallery has several different booths for exhibition, I created a series of posters that suit each environment and change based on external influences.
In the past, all things had physical properties. Although past artistic pieces captured a moment of time in "objects" that could be a single painting or single sculpture, artistic pieces in the modern and contemporary world tend to be images or experiences with no physical properties most of the time due to the addition of the new axis of time.
Due to the advance of technology, physical properties that could only be realized by actually existing can now be reproduced using digital arithmetic processing. However, the physical properties of virtual reality that are created by machine processing are nothing more than fiction and do not have any unexpectedness or attraction.
I produced these pieces based on my belief that commonly seen digital expressions can have a completely new expression and tug at people's heartstrings if I take the opposite approach of using analog methods to give digital themes physical properties, rather than using digital methods to create analog expressions, which is very commonly seen today.
